Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet-fly / light nymph hook, 16-20
  • Thread Olive or primrose 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Blue dun material (few soft hackle fibers)
  • Body Olive-gray material (spun fur dubbing (hare/muskrat blend))
  • Rib Fine gold wire (optional, 4-5 turns)
  • Hackle Blue dun hen or partridge (1-2 turns, sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, running a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a few soft blue-dun fibers for a short tail, about half a shank long.
  3. Spin a sparse noodle of olive-gray fur onto waxed thread and wrap a slim, translucent body to the 75% mark; use half the dubbing you think.
  4. Counter-wrap a fine gold rib forward in 4-5 open turns for a touch of segmentation, then tie off.
  5. Tie in a blue-dun hen or partridge hackle by the tip and take just one to two turns so the fibers stay soft and sparse.
  6. Stroke the fibers back and down, build a small head, and whip finish.
