Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black over tan (2mm foam, layered)
  • Underbody/dubbing Rust or amber dubbing (sparse)
  • Wing White uni stretch (poly or Widow's Web, tented)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (small round rubber, 2 per side)
  • Post/indicator Orange or pink material (small foam tab)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread mid-shank, laying a base back to the 70% mark.
  2. Bind a gap-width foam strip at the 70% mark to form the rear ant-style gaster, pinching a segment waist.
  3. Advance thread and dub a thin rust body forward to the 40% mark.
  4. Figure-8 one rubber leg per side at the waist so they splay wide.
  5. Tent a sparse white poly wing low over the back for a flying-insect silhouette.
  6. Fold the front foam forward over the thorax and bind behind the eye to form the head bump.
  7. Add a small orange foam sighter on top, whip finish, and trim the foam head short.
