Fluttering Stone

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry hook, #8-#14
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Body Golden/tan material (fine dubbing)
  • Wing Mottled brown pectoral fins (2 hen or turkey tips, tented)
  • Hackle Ginger/grizzly hackle (2, wound full)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and dub a slim golden-tan body from the bend to the front quarter.
  2. Tie in two matched mottled feather tips as a low tented downwing over the back, reaching past the bend, shiny side out.
  3. Tie in two dry hackles at the wing base.
  4. Wind the hackles densely front and rear of the wing for a bushy, high-floating collar that lets the fly ride up and flutter.
  5. Clear the eye, build a small head, whip finish and cement.
  6. Trim the hackle flat underneath if you want it to sit lower on flat water.
