Floating Caddis Pupa

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger/pupa hook, #12-#18
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Abdomen Olive/green material (dubbing or Antron)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (1 strand)
  • Bubble/shuck White uni stretch (poly or Antron over the back)
  • Legs Brown partridge (1 soft-hackle turn)
  • Thorax Brown permanent marker (peacock or dark dubbing)
  • Wing tuft Dun CDC (1 small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook on the curved shank and run thread to the bend.
  2. Dub a slim tapered abdomen two-thirds up the shank and counter-rib it with 4-5 wire turns.
  3. Tie a strand of white poly along the back and pull it over later as an air-bubble sheath, which floats the pupa in the film.
  4. Dub a slightly fatter thorax of peacock or dark dubbing.
  5. Wrap one turn of partridge as swept-back legs, then pull the poly bubble over the top and tie it down.
  6. Add a short dun CDC tuft at the head for extra float, whip finish and treat the CDC and bubble with dry floatant.
