Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 14-16

Materials

  • Tail Honey dun cock hackle fibers (4-6 fibers)
  • Rib Flat gold tinsel (fine)
  • Body Pale yellow floss (1 strand)
  • Wing Pale starling wing quill slips (1 pair)
  • Hackle Honey dun cock hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread one eye-length behind the eye and wrap back to the bend in touching turns.
  2. Tie in 4-6 honey dun fibers as a tail, one shank length long.
  3. Tie in fine flat gold tinsel at the bend, then wrap pale yellow floss forward in smooth touching turns to the 70% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold tinsel forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and tie off. The rib adds flash and protects the floss.
  5. Mount a pair of pale starling quill slips upright at the 75% mark, one shank length tall.
  6. Wind the honey dun hackle 3-4 turns behind and 2 turns in front of the wing, then whip finish.
