Classic Recipe

  • Hook jig or curved nymph hook (Umpqua U106), 6-12
  • Thread brown or tan 6/0 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Beads Brass beads (Umpqua Radiant) for weight/segmentation (2-3)
  • Tail/Antennae/Legs Barred Sexi-Floss (MFC) (several strands)
  • Body Chocklett's Body Tubing (1 length)
  • Dubbing/Thorax Ice Dub + Hare's Ear Plus dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide 2-3 brass beads onto the hook to add weight and create the segmented abdomen look, then start the thread.
  2. Tie in two strands of barred Sexi-Floss at the bend as splayed tails/cerci.
  3. Tie in a length of body tubing and pull it forward over the beads, binding between each bead so the translucent tubing shows the bead segmentation through it. This is what gives the realistic plated-abdomen look.
  4. At the thorax, tie in pairs of Sexi-Floss legs along each side.
  5. Dub a buggy thorax of Ice Dub blended with Hare's Ear over the leg tie-in points.
  6. Pull a final section of tubing over the thorax as a wing case and tie it off, then add Sexi-Floss antennae at the head.
  7. Whip finish and add a dab of glue at each whip/segment for durability.
