Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook, #12-#18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver or black bead (1, sized to gap)
  • Body Red/black/olive material (Flexi Floss or Spanflex)
  • Rib Fine wire (optional) (silver)
  • Thorax Black/peacock ice dub (dubbing or herl)
  • Gills White uni stretch (small tuft antron or poly)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a small silver bead to the eye and mount the hook, running thread to the bend.
  2. Tie in a strand of Flexi Floss at the bend, stretching it thin.
  3. Wrap the Flexi Floss forward in touching turns to build a slim, segmented body up to the bead, letting the stretch create tapered ribbing.
  4. Tie off the floss and dub a slightly thicker thorax of black dubbing or a turn of peacock herl behind the bead.
  5. Tie in a small white tuft at the front for gills, keeping it sparse.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and coat the body with thin UV resin or head cement for a glassy look.
