Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4XL streamer or jig, straight/60-degree, #2-#6
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Bead/cone Gold or coated (1, sized to gap)
  • Tail Flesh/tan material (marabou plus a few strands flash)
  • Body Flesh/tan material (pale variegated chenille or dubbing)
  • Collar Tan carapace (schlappen or soft hackle)
  • Head Tan/olive carapace (sculpin wool or spun deer hair)
  • Pectoral fins Barred pectoral fins (2 hen or webby feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the bead or cone at the eye and mount the hook, starting thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a flesh marabou tail one shank length long with a couple of flash strands blended in.
  3. Wrap a pale, buggy chenille or dubbed body forward to the front third, leaving room for the head.
  4. Tie in and wrap a soft schlappen collar and sweep the fibers back.
  5. Tie a splayed hen feather on each side as pectoral fins, then spin or stack sculpin wool for a broad flat head.
  6. Trim the head wide and flat like a sculpin, whip finish and cement.
