Flashback Shrimp

Nymph · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/grub hook (TMC 2457), 12-16
  • Thread tan or olive 8/0 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Weight .015 lead-free wire (optional) (6-8 turns)
  • Rib Monofilament or fine wire (6 in)
  • Body Wapsi rainbow / sow-scud dubbing (pinch)
  • Shellback/Flashback Pearl tinsel or pearl Krystal Flash (1 strip)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally wrap 6-8 turns of lead wire at the thorax to weight the fly and build the shrimp's humped back.
  2. At the bend tie in the mono rib and a strip of pearl tinsel (or a bundle of pearl Krystal Flash) for the shellback.
  3. Dub a fat, tapered body forward to the eye.
  4. Pull the pearl shellback over the top and secure it at the eye to form a flashy back.
  5. Counter-wrap the mono rib forward in 4-6 even turns to segment the shell and lock it down; the flash imitates the light-catching carapace of a live shrimp.
  6. Whip finish and pick out the belly dubbing to suggest legs.
