Classic Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph hook (bead optional), 10-14
  • Thread black 8/0 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold or copper (optional) bead (1)
  • Tag Red Antron yarn or red wool (short tuft)
  • Rib Small gold wire (6 in)
  • Body Peacock herl (2 strands)
  • Flashback Pearl/opal tinsel (1 strip)
  • Collar Brown hen hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally slide on a bead. Tie in a short, bright tuft of red Antron at the bend as the tag. The trigger point of the fly.
  2. Tie in the gold wire, a strip of pearl tinsel, and two peacock herls.
  3. Twist the herls with the thread for durability and wrap forward to build a plump body, stopping short of the eye.
  4. Pull the pearl tinsel over the top and tie it down to form a flashback, then counter-wrap the gold wire in 4-5 open turns to rib and protect the fragile herl.
  5. Tie in a brown hen hackle and take 2-3 soft turns as a collar, then sweep the fibers back.
  6. Build a small head and whip finish.
