Materials

  • Pheasant tail fibres Natural pheasant tail fibers (Tail)
  • Ultra wire, small Copper wire (One length)
  • Opal tinsel Opal tinsel medium (Flashback plus a wider piece for the wing case)
  • Peacock quill, stripped Natural peacock herl (1 (abdomen))
  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (1 strand (thorax))

How to tie it

  1. Start black thread on a 2XL nymph hook and tie in pheasant tail fibres for the tail.
  2. Add small copper wire, then opal tinsel, then a stripped peacock quill, all at the rear. Stacking every material at the same anchor point and tapering the thread body over them keeps the finished abdomen smooth.
  3. Wrap the stripped peacock quill forward in touching turns to the thread and tie off. A stripped quill gives you natural segmentation and a slim, glossy abdomen that dubbing cannot match.
  4. Pull the opal tinsel over the top as a flashback and tie it down, then counter-rib the copper wire forward. The wire protects the fragile quill and locks the flashback at the same time.
  5. Tie in a wider piece of opal tinsel for the wing case and a strand of peacock herl, wrap the herl to form the thorax, and tie it off. Peacock herl at the thorax is the oldest trick in nymph fishing. The iridescence reads as life.
  6. Pull the wing case over, lash it down, trim the excess and whip finish.
