Materials

  • Tail Guard hairs (pinch)
  • Rib Gold wire (spiral)
  • Body Hare's ear dubbing (tapered)
  • Wingcase Pearl flashabou (3-4 strands)
  • Thorax Dark hare's ear (rough)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a standard nymph hook and start brown thread behind the eye, laying a base back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small pinch of hare's mask guard hairs as a tail, half a shank length long.
  3. Catch in gold wire at the tail base.
  4. Dub a tapered hare's ear abdomen forward over the rear two thirds of the shank, thin at the tail and building as it goes.
  5. Spiral the gold wire forward in 5 evenly spaced turns and helicopter off the excess.
  6. Tie in three or four strands of pearl Flashabou pointing back over the abdomen.
  7. Dub a rough, spiky thorax of dark hare's ear up to one eye-length behind the eye.
  8. Pull the Flashabou forward over the thorax as a wingcase, bind it down, and trim.
  9. Pick out the thorax dubbing along the sides for legs, build a small head, whip finish and cement.
