  • Hook Ahrex FW580
  • Thread Fluorescent green

Materials

  • Gold bead Gold bead (1)
  • Micro pine squirrel zonker Natural pine squirrel strip (tail, and fibres for the dubbing loop)
  • Synthetic quill Dark olive body quill (body)
  • Mirage Flash, saltwater weight (flashback)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead onto an Ahrex FW580 and start fluorescent green thread. Tie in a piece of micro pine squirrel zonker for the tail, stripping the hide bare where it will be tied in so the body underneath stays perfectly smooth.
  2. Level the body out with thread wraps.
  3. Tie in a dark olive synthetic quill and open spiral it up to behind the bead. Open spirals rather than touching turns give you the segmented look of a damsel abdomen with almost no bulk.
  4. Tie in a length of Mirage Flash for the flashback. Use the saltwater grade, which is a little thicker and holds up better.
  5. Make a dubbing loop of the same pine squirrel fibres you used for the tail and wrap it forward as the thorax.
  6. Pull the Mirage Flash over the thorax and tie it off, then trim it out.
  7. Whip finish and go fishing.
