Classic Recipe

  • Hook 3XL streamer hook, 4-12
  • Thread olive or black 6/0 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold (optional) bead (1)
  • Weight .020 lead-free wire (8-10 turns)
  • Tail Marabou (olive/black/brown) (1 plume)
  • Flash Krystal Flash or Flashabou (4-6 strands)
  • Body Medium chenille to match (1 length)
  • Hackle Saddle hackle to match (1 feather)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (optional) (6 in)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a bead to the eye if using, then wrap 8-10 turns of lead-free wire behind it for weight and jam it against the bead.
  2. Tie in a marabou tail about one shank length long at the bend.
  3. Split 4-6 strands of flash and tie a few down each side of the tail, then fold the excess back and bind it so fish teeth can't pull it free.
  4. Tie in a saddle hackle by the tip and a length of chenille at the bend.
  5. Wrap the chenille forward to just behind the bead to form the body.
  6. Palmer the hackle forward through the body in 5-6 open evenly spaced turns and secure behind the bead. Optionally counter-wrap wire to reinforce the hackle.
  7. Build a small thread head and whip finish.
