Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy saltwater/GT hook, 3/0-6/0
  • Thread Red GSP 100-200 (strong)

Materials

  • Tail Red bucktail (sparse clump)
  • Flash Red and pearl Flashabou (several strands)
  • Body Red bucktail (stacked bundles) (2-3 clumps)
  • Collar Red saddle hackle/schlappen (1 feather)
  • Wing Red bucktail (1 clump)
  • Eyes Stick-on (optional) (1 pair)
  • Head Red thread + UV resin (coating)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the heavy hook and lay a thread base along the shank.
  2. Tie in a sparse clump of red bucktail at the bend for the tail, about two shank lengths, mixed with red and pearl flash.
  3. Build the body in 2-3 stacked bucktail bundles working forward, each tied in and folded back to build bulk and a deep profile.
  4. Run red flash between the bundles so it flashes the full length of the fly.
  5. Wrap a red saddle hackle as a collar, sweep it back, and stack a final red bucktail bundle over the top as a wing.
  6. Form a smooth red thread head, add stick-on eyes if desired, whip finish, and coat the head with UV resin.
