Materials

  • Bead, 1/8 Gold bead (1)
  • Pine squirrel zonker Reddish maroon (Tail)
  • UV Straggle chenille Red cactus chenille medium (Body)

How to tie it

  1. Dress a beaded size 10 scud hook with red thread, running a little way into the bend but not far.
  2. Tie a reddish maroon pine squirrel zonker in on top, trimmed to length. Squirrel is finer than rabbit, so the tail stays proportionate on a micro leech.
  3. Tie red UV Straggle in near the back. If the thread wants to jump to the wrong side, spin the bobbin in the direction you want it to go and it will land where you need it.
  4. Bring the thread back to the bead, then wrap the Straggle forward, preening the fibres back as you go so they stand out rather than getting trapped under the next turn.
  5. At the bead take about one and a half wraps, grab the Straggle and lock it with a couple of firm wraps, then trim.
  6. Put glue on the thread and take a couple of turns before whip finishing so the knot sits under the bead, done this way the fly lasts a long time.
  7. Trim the tail to preference, a little longer than the hook shank. Patterns do not get much simpler and it is effective.
