Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60-degree jig nymph hook, 8-12
  • Thread Burnt orange 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Black or copper slotted tungsten (sized to hook)
  • Abdomen Burnt-orange (October caddis) dubbing (fat, tapered)
  • Rib Copper wire (1 strand)
  • Thorax Dark brown/black dubbing (pinch)
  • Legs Brown partridge or hen (2-3 turns)
  • Hotspot Orange dubbing/thread (short band)

How to tie it

  1. Seat a slotted tungsten bead on the jig hook, mount, and start thread.
  2. Tie in copper wire at the bend for the rib.
  3. Dub a fat, tapered burnt-orange abdomen to the 65% mark - October caddis larvae are chunky.
  4. Counter-wrap the copper rib in 5-6 turns and tie off.
  5. Dub a dark-brown thorax collar behind the bead.
  6. Wrap 2-3 turns of brown partridge for legs, sweep the fibers back, and add a short orange hotspot at the bead.
  7. Whip finish. Dead-drift or Euro-nymph it deep in autumn when October caddis are active, especially in freestone rivers.
