Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL curved stonefly nymph hook, 6-10
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Copper tungsten bead (sized to hook)
  • Weight Lead-free wire (10-12 wraps)
  • Tails Brown goose biots (2, split)
  • Abdomen Golden-brown stone dubbing (tapered)
  • Rib Amber/brown wire (1 strand)
  • Hotspot Fluorescent orange dubbing (short band)
  • Wingcase Mottled brown thin skin (1 strip)
  • Thorax Brown/black dubbing (shaggy pinch)
  • Legs Brown mottled hen or centipede legs (1 set)
  • Antennae Brown biots (2)

How to tie it

  1. Seat a copper tungsten bead behind the eye, mount the hook, and start thread.
  2. Wrap 10-12 turns of lead-free wire and jam it up into the bead, then bind it down.
  3. Tie in two brown biots at the bend splayed into a V for the tails, one shank length and no more.
  4. Catch in the wire rib and dub a tapered golden-brown abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  5. Counter-wrap the rib in 6-7 open turns, tie off, and lay in a bright fluorescent-orange hotspot band at the front of the abdomen.
  6. Tie in the Thin Skin wingcase, dub a fat shaggy thorax, then pull the wingcase over and bind at the bead.
  7. Fold a set of mottled legs to each side, then add two short biot antennae angled forward over the eye.
  8. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
