Fire Starter Nymph

Classic Recipe

  • Hook jig or competition nymph hook (Firehole 317 or similar), 14-18
  • Thread fire orange 14/0 14/0

Materials

  • Bead Copper/gold slotted tungsten (1)
  • Weight .010 lead-free wire (optional) (few turns)
  • Tail Ginger speckled Coq de Leon fibers (few fibers)
  • Underbody Fine copper holographic tinsel (1 length)
  • Body Stripped/quill or holographic tinsel (1 length)
  • Wing case/Hot spot Fire orange thread collar + black marker wing case (-)
  • Coating UV resin (1 coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a tungsten bead to the eye and add a few turns of lead wire behind it if extra weight is wanted.
  2. Start the fire orange thread and tie in a short tail of Coq de Leon fibers at the bend, about one hook gap long.
  3. Tie in copper holographic tinsel and wrap a slim, flashy tapered body forward to just behind the bead.
  4. Build a fire orange thread hot-spot collar right behind the bead. The trigger point that makes this perdigon 'explosive' in off-color water.
  5. Color a wing case on top with a black marker.
  6. Coat the entire body and wing case with a thin layer of UV resin and cure it so the fly is slick and sinks fast.
  7. Whip finish.
