Fire Spot Egg

Egg · Trout · Steelhead · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved egg/scud hook, 12-16
  • Thread pink or orange 8/0 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold or pink tungsten (optional) bead (1)
  • Egg McFly Foam / Glo-Bug yarn, pale egg color (1 clump)
  • Hot spot Fire-orange or red egg yarn (small tuft)
  • Veil Sparkle Antron/veil material (optional) (wisp)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally slide on a bead. Lay a short thread base at mid-shank.
  2. Tie a clump of pale egg-colored yarn on top of the shank with several tight wraps so it stands up.
  3. Add a small tuft of fire-orange yarn on top as the blood spot / hot center. This is the 'fire spot' trigger.
  4. Optionally veil the whole thing with a wisp of sparkle Antron to imitate the milky halo of a leaking egg.
  5. Gather all the yarn upright, pull it taut, and make a few tight thread wraps at the base to bunch it into a ball.
  6. Whip finish at the base, then trim the yarn into a round egg shape with the orange spot showing on top.
