Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / spider hook, 14-16
  • Thread Yellow (Pearsall's Gossamer) 8/0

Materials

  • Silk Yellow Pearsall's Gossamer, waxed (full body)
  • Body The waxed yellow silk (shank)
  • Hackle The bloa (slate) feather from a fieldfare's rump (or tern, bluetail or jay) (1 turn)
  • Legs (alt hackle) Feather of the golden plover (1 turn)

How to tie it

  1. Run the yellow silk from behind the eye to above the barb and back to the two-thirds mark; the yellow silk is the body.
  2. Tie in the soft slate-blue rump feather of a fieldfare (or a tern/jay substitute) by the tip at the two-thirds mark.
  3. Take one sparse turn of hackle, or wind a golden plover feather for the legs, and secure with two turns of silk.
  4. Stroke the fibres back, build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
