Wing White calf tail or bucktail topped with a few strands of pearl Krystal Flash
How to tie it
Start the black thread a good two eye-lengths behind the eye, as a visual reminder not to crowd the front of the fly, and wrap back to just past the hook point.
Measure a small clump of white calf tail to about half a shank length and bind it in as the tail. Trim the butts to about the length of the body and bind them down.
Attach the flat silver diamond braid at the front with a couple of loose wraps, pull it through to gather the ends together, then bind it along the top of the shank back to about the halfway point.
Wrap the flat silver diamond braid forward in overlapping turns, carrying it a little past where the chenille will start. Tie it in securely with wraps in front and behind, and clip the surplus.
Pluck the pile off the end of the chartreuse chenille to bare the core and seat it with tight wraps. Take three turns forward, since the bushy chenille will not fit the four the recipe calls for, tie it in well and clip the excess. Bind down any fibres reaching past the tie-in point.
Add extra wax to the thread, because calf tail is slippery. Cut a sparse clump of white calf tail, measure it to almost the full length of the tail, and cut it to length. Offer it to the hook with a pinch wrap and add securing wraps so the wing sits at an angle to the body.
Advance the thread to the eye. Take two strands of pearl Krystal Flash, wrap them around the thread and bring them to the top, then secure them along the top of the calf tail. Trim them to slightly unequal lengths.
Build a neat thread head, trim any stray hairs, whip finish and remove the thread.
Coat the head with Sally Hansen Hard as Nails, let it dry, and add a second coat later.
