Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy-wire saltwater hook, 1
  • Thread Tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Lead (dumbbell, medium-large)
  • Tail Tan carapace (marabou + a few rubber legs)
  • Flash Gold flashabou (few strands)
  • Body Tan carapace (EP/craft-fur crab dubbing)
  • Weed guard Clear weed guard (mono loop)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a heavy-wire saltwater hook and lash lead dumbbell eyes a third back on top so the fly rides hook-point-up on the flats.
  2. Start thread at the bend and tie in a tan marabou tail one shank length long with a few rubber legs for a fleeing, wounded wiggle.
  3. Add a couple of strands of tan/gold flash over the tail.
  4. Build a broad, flat crab-shrimp body of tan EP fibres or craft-fur dubbing, figure-8ed around the dumbbell to spread it wide.
  5. Brush the body full, then trim it flat top and bottom so it sinks level.
  6. Tie in a short mono weed guard at the eye to bounce it through coral and turtle grass.
  7. Whip finish and trim the profile to a compact carrot shape.
