Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook (Hanak 400BL) with gold bead, 16
  • Thread Light/cream 18/0 gel spun

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (2.8mm)
  • Lead wire (bead lock) Natural lead wire (.010, ~7 wraps)
  • Antron yarn (shuck and gas bubble) Cream/light pink antron yarn (small amount)
  • Vernille/micro chenille (body) Earthworm (brown/yellow) (1 length)
  • Partridge feather (collar) Natural partridge (1 feather)
  • Peacock herl (head) Natural peacock herl (1-2 strands)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (antennae) Natural pheasant tail fibers (a few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Place the gold bead on the jig hook and secure the hook in the vise; lock the bead with about seven wraps of.010 lead wire tucked into the back of the bead.
  2. Start the thread leaving a long tag, wax it, and bind the lead tightly against the bead; wrap a base back to the bend.
  3. Tie in a pinch of Antron yarn at the bend and trim to a tapered trailing shuck about twice the shank length.
  4. Chop a few short pieces of Antron, blend into a loose dubbing, touch-dub it onto the waxed thread and wrap a 'gas bubble' forward to just behind the bead.
  5. Taper one end of the Vernille with a lighter, tie it in and wrap it forward to form the segmented body up behind the bead; tie off and trim.
  6. Tie in a partridge feather by the tip and take one or two turns for a sparse soft-hackle collar; tie off and stroke the fibers back.
  7. Tie in one or two strands of peacock herl and wrap a small head behind the bead; tie off and trim.
  8. Tie in a few pheasant tail fibers pointing forward over the bead as antennae and trim to length.
  9. Whip finish and add a drop of head cement to secure.
