Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved Klinkhammer-style dry hook (e.g. Daiichi 1160), 16
  • Thread Red 14/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (3mm foam strip)
  • Abdomen/Thorax Mahogany (superfine dubbing)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (super floss)
  • Wing Smoke/rust/gold material (poly macrame yarn + UV blue ripple ice fiber)
  • Indicator Pink ears (razor foam tab)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (1 rooster feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a curved Klinkhammer-style hook and lay a thread base to the bend so the rear will sit down in the film.
  2. Bind a strip of black foam in at the bend, leaving the tag hanging back to fold later.
  3. Dub a slim mahogany abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Pull the foam over the abdomen and bind it to make a segmented ant hump, leaving the rest of the foam forward.
  5. Figure-8 black super floss across the hook for two sets of splayed legs and trim to a shank length.
  6. Tie in a wing of mixed smoke/rust/gold macrame yarn topped with a few strands of UV-blue ripple ice fiber, then add a pink razor-foam sight post.
  7. Wind a brown hackle collar through the thorax, dub a touch more mahogany, and whip finish.
