Fan Wing Royal Coachman

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 10-14
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Golden pheasant tippet (bunch)
  • Body Peacock-red floss-peacock (banded)
  • Wing White duck breast feathers (fan, curved out)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the dry hook and run black thread to the mid-shank wing point.
  2. Select two white duck breast feathers, pair them back-to-back so they curve away from each other, and tie them in upright as fan wings, then post and divide them.
  3. Run thread to the bend and tie in a bunch of golden pheasant tippet as a tail.
  4. Build the royal body: a butt of peacock herl, a band of red floss, then a front collar of peacock herl.
  5. Tie in two brown cock hackles behind and in front of the wings.
  6. Wind the hackles in close turns to make a dense collar, tie off, whip finish and varnish.
