Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard/heavy nymph hook (e.g. Hanak 230), 12
  • Thread Red 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Nickel bead (2.8mm tungsten)
  • Body Holo natural (synthetic holographic peacock quill)
  • Gills White uni stretch (short pinch fl. white floss each side)
  • Thorax UV hot orange material (ice dub)
  • Coating Clear head cement (UV resin over body)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a nickel tungsten bead onto a #12 nymph hook, mount, and start red thread behind the bead.
  2. Lay a perfectly smooth thread base down to a point above the barb, a lumpy base ruins a quill body.
  3. Tie in a strand of holographic synthetic quill at the rear.
  4. Wind the quill forward in touching, non-overlapping turns to just behind the bead for a slim segmented body, then tie off.
  5. Coat the quill body with UV resin and cure for a glassy, durable finish.
  6. Tie a short pinch of white floss on each side of the bead as breather gills, no longer than the bead itself.
  7. Dub a tight collar of UV hot-orange ice dub between the gills and bead and whip finish.
