Classic Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead/salmon iron, 4-8
  • Thread Black or red 6/0

Materials

  • Body Oval or flat silver tinsel (1)
  • Hackle Red saddle or hen (1)
  • Wing Fluorescent orange bucktail or calf tail (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a smooth thread base and wrap silver tinsel from above the barb to two eye-widths behind the eye in touching, non-overlapping turns. Just three materials, so a clean body matters.
  2. Take 2-3 turns of red hackle as a collar and sweep the fibers back and slightly down.
  3. Tie in a sparse fluorescent orange wing on top, extending to the bend.
  4. Build a small neat head, whip finish, and cement.
