Classic Recipe

  • Hook Blind-eye or up-eye classic salmon fly hook, 1/0-6
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Gold twist and scarlet silk (as needed)
  • Tail Toucan and jungle cock point dyed scarlet (1 + 1 point)
  • Body Black seal's fur (full shank)
  • Rib Oval gold tinsel (5-6 turns)
  • Throat Light blue hackle (long) and gallina dyed orange (1 collar)
  • Wing Peacock herl, swan dyed yellow and scarlet, summer duck, capped with two strips of white-tipped black turkey (1 mixed wing)
  • Sides Jungle cock dyed scarlet (1 per side)
  • Head Black herl (few turns)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a tag of gold twist and scarlet silk over the barb, then tie in a toucan feather with a scarlet-dyed jungle cock point for the tail.
  2. Spin and wrap black seal's fur for the body, then rib it with oval gold tinsel in evenly spaced turns.
  3. At the throat wind a long light-blue hackle followed by orange-dyed gallina, then stroke the fibres down.
  4. Build the wing from peacock herl, married strands of yellow and scarlet swan and summer duck, capped with two white-tipped black turkey strips set low over the body.
  5. Add scarlet-dyed jungle cock sides, form a small black herl head and whip finish.
