Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL nymph/streamer hook (e.g. TMC 5262 / Fulling Mill 1710), 8
  • Thread Fluorescent Orange 140 denier

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (3mm hi-float foam strip, shank length)
  • Overbody Black ostrich herl (2mm hi-float foam strip)
  • Underwing White uni stretch (small pinch EP fibers)
  • Overwing Fl. Orange material (sparse ultra dry yarn)
  • Legs Orange rubber legs (barred sexi floss, 2 strands)
  • Indicator Sunburst orange (2mm foam tab)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a #8 nymph/streamer hook and lay a thread base back to the bend.
  2. Cut a shank-length strip of 3mm black foam, taper the rear to a point, and bind it on top at the bend so the point overhangs a third of a shank as the stubby tail.
  3. Advance the thread to the 60% mark, pull the foam forward, bind it, and segment the body with 2-3 tight thread wraps.
  4. Tie in a narrower 2mm foam strip and repeat to hump the over-body without adding bulk.
  5. Fold a sparse bunch of white EP fibers over the back as an underwing and snip level with the tail; top with a thin over-wing of orange dry yarn, splayed slightly to each side to mimic a cicada trying to lift off.
  6. Figure-8 a strand of orange sexi floss across the hook for two pairs of legs and trim each to a gap-and-a-half.
  7. Cap the thorax with a small sunburst-orange foam tab as a sight post and whip finish under the head.
