How to tie it
Start Nano Silk 12/0 on a size 2 Kamasan B940 and lay a base along the straight part of the shank. Measure a tail of white bucktail the same length as that straight portion, trim the butts on an angle so they blend into the wraps, and lock it down with edge-to-edge turns.
Cement the tail wraps, then tie a clump of orange deer hair at the base of the tail, pull the fibres back and trim them to a taper pointing rearward. That flared orange butt is a hot spot the fish see from below as the fly wakes.
Add two white rubber legs a side with the red tips level with the tail end, then tie in two folded cree saddles by their tips from underneath. Folded now so the fibres already sweep back when you palmer them later.
Tie in the second bucktail clump behind the eye for the wing, about one and a half hook gaps long, then split it into two equal halves with figure-eight and post wraps. The split wing is what stops the fly from rolling as it skates.
Cage the tail and wing under a temporary wrap of wire so nothing gets clipped, tie in the shaped foam by its tip at the orange butt, then spin natural and dyed yellow deer hair the full length to just behind the eye, packing hard with a brassie. Trim the spun hair to a cigar shape and unwind the wire.
With 18/0 thread, palmer the two folded cree hackles over the deer hair body on a slight angle and tie them off behind the wing, then wind a third cree as a front collar. Fold the foam strip over the hackled body and secure it. Foam over deer hair is why this thing refuses to sink.
Finish with a clump of moose mane tied in underneath, opposite the foam, at about half the body length. Whip finish and cement. Fish it on a tight swing so it wakes across the surface for summer steelhead.
