Svenddiesel Recipe

  • Hook dry fly (Stealth Hook D series), 6-10
  • Thread Black 8/0 (3/0 recommended)

Materials

  • Tail Krystal Flash, red and black (3-4 strands, folded)
  • Underbody 2mm black craft foam, cut to an eighth-inch strip (1 strip)
  • Body FrankenDub Monster Dub, black mixed with red (2 noodles)
  • Overbody Three 2mm foam layers glued to 6mm, Loco Foam on top (1 cut body)
  • Legs Centipede legs, red (1 per side)
  • Wing Deer belly hair (1 bunch)
  • Glue Gorilla super glue, liquid not gel (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the Stealth D series size 6 and start Semperfli waxed 8/0 behind the eye, running loose, non-touching wraps down the shank. A heavier 3/0 thread would be a better choice given how much foam this fly carries.
  2. Take three or four strands of red and black Krystal Flash, fold them in half and trim the ends flush, then tie them in from the hook point back as the tail, adding a wrap underneath to cock the tail up. Secure and return the thread to the eye.
  3. Cut an eighth-inch strip of 2mm black craft foam and secure it behind the hook eye with a figure-of-eight.
  4. Lay a bead of liquid Gorilla super glue along the shank, liquid, not gel, so it sets fast, then hold the foam down and palmer it back down the shank in loose ribbing wraps to the bend. Keep the wraps loose: pull the foam tight and you crush the open cells that make it float.
  5. Tie the foam off at the bend, keeping the Krystal Flash clear of the glue, snip the butt end, then criss-cross the thread back up the shank to build a uniform underbody while leaving the foam uncompressed.
  6. Blend black and red FrankenDub Monster Dub and dub forward from the bend, stopping at the hook point where the foam overbody will sit.
  7. Prepare the overbody: glue three 2mm foam sheets together with a thin coat of super glue, wiggling each layer as you press so the glue spreads right across, holding each for five to ten seconds, with the Loco Foam on top. That gives about 6mm total. Cut the body out with a foam cutter, pressing hard through the glued layers and through the Loco Foam's sheen, then work the cutter free and pop the body out with your scissors or a bodkin if it sticks.
  8. Lay the foam body on top and secure it with a few loose wraps into the same groove, then tighten on the third and fourth wraps.
  9. Tie a red centipede leg in on each side, setting the wrap into the groove and positioning each leg on the lower section of the foam.
  10. Stack and tie in a bunch of deer belly hair as the wing in front of the foam body.
  11. Dub the remaining Monster Dub over the wing butts to the eye, whip finish and trim the wing to length.
