Evergreen Coffin Fly

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread White 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Black ostrich herl (3 moose body or micro-fibett fibers)
  • Body White uni stretch (white dubbing or floss)
  • Wing Grizzly hackle (2 hackle tips, spent)
  • Hackle Badger hackle (1-2 dry-fly hackles)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank and tie in three splayed black tail fibers, one and a half shanks long.
  2. Dub or wrap a slim white body forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Tie in two grizzly hackle tips and post them out to the sides as spent wings.
  4. Figure-8 thread around the wing bases to set them flat and splayed.
  5. Tie in one or two badger hackles at the wing and wind them fore and aft of the wing.
  6. Trim any stray fibers underneath so the fly rides flush, then whip finish at the eye.
