Classic Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead/salmon, 4-10
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Purple hackle fibers (sparse)
  • Body Purple chenille or dubbing (full)
  • Rib Silver oval (spiral)
  • Wing White calf or polar sub (sparse)
  • Hackle Purple hackle (collar)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the steelhead hook and run black thread to the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse bunch of purple hackle fibers as a tail, one shank long, then catch in silver oval rib.
  3. Wrap purple chenille or dub a full purple body forward to just short of the eye and tie off.
  4. Spiral the silver rib forward in 5-6 even open turns and secure.
  5. Tie in a sparse white calf or polar-sub wing on top, extending to the bend.
  6. Tie in a purple hackle by the tip and take 2 turns as a collar, sweeping the fibers back.
  7. Build a neat head, whip finish and varnish.
