Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60-degree jig or curved scud hook, 12-16
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Copper bead (slotted tungsten, 3.0mm)
  • Body Olive-tan material (scud/sow-bug dubbing)
  • Shellback Clear scud back thin skin (Scud Back or stretch flash)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (fine wire)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted bead and start thread, wrapping back to the bend.
  2. Tie in the clear shellback strip and a length of copper wire at the tail.
  3. Dub a plump, slightly overfull body forward to just behind the bead.
  4. Pull the shellback strip tight over the top and bind it behind the bead.
  5. Spiral the wire rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the back and tie off.
  6. Pick out dubbing on the underside for legs, then whip finish behind the bead.
