Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Long-shank streamer (3XL to 7XL), 8 (4-8)
  • Thread Hot orange 6/0

Materials

  • Bucktail Yellow bucktail (One fat bunch for the tail)
  • Cactus chenille Gold cactus chenille (About 5 inches)
  • Hen hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather for the collar)
  • Saddle hackles Yellow saddle hackle (2)
  • Saddle hackles Grizzly hackle (2)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (One drop to glue the wing)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a base of hot orange thread from behind the eye all the way to the start of the bend.
  2. Cut a fat bunch of yellow bucktail, pull out the short underfur but leave the tips natural and uneven. Measure it long, a full shank length past the bend, and tie it in at the bend with two or three wraps, then add a wrap directly under the bunch so it cannot spin around the shank.
  3. Leave the butt ends in place and bind them forward with loose wraps to the 85% point to fatten the underbody, then take a couple of tight wraps and clip the excess.
  4. Wrap the orange thread back and forth over the whole shank to build a solid bright orange underbody. You want that colour showing through the chenille.
  5. Tie in the gold cactus chenille at the bend and wrap it forward in slightly open turns so the orange peeks between the wraps. Tie off at the 85% point, trim, and brush the chenille out with a toothbrush.
  6. Tie in a grizzly hen hackle by the fat end so the barbs come out long, take three or four turns for a collar, tie off and trim. Sweep the collar back with your fingers.
  7. Build the wing off the vise: stack two yellow saddle hackles and sandwich them between two grizzly saddles, then glue all four together at the butts with a drop of UV resin and cure.
  8. Set the glued wing on top of the shank with a couple of loose wraps, adjust it until it sits upright and centred, then lock it down with tight wraps going forward. Trim the butts with heavy scissors. You are cutting through cured resin.
  9. Build a big bright orange head over the stub, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
