Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved midge/scud hook, #18-#22
  • Thread Dark brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black or copper slotted tungsten bead (1 small tungsten)
  • Body Dark brown/black material (Tying thread, wrapped smooth)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (Fine wire, 4-5 turns)
  • Thorax Black/peacock ice dub (Peacock herl or dark dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start thread behind the bead.
  2. Bind in the copper wire and run the thread back to the bend.
  3. Wrap the thread forward in smooth, slightly overlapping turns to build a slim, dark, glossy abdomen up to the 70% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the copper rib forward in 4-5 open turns for a segmented shimmer and tie off.
  5. Build a small peacock or black dubbing thorax against the bead.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead.
