Reference Recipe

  • Hook Streamer/stinger hook (2XL-4XL), #2-#6
  • Thread Tan/gray Flat waxed

Materials

  • Tail Tan carapace (Thin leather or ultra-chenille strip)
  • Body Natural deer/gray (Spun and packed deer hair)
  • Ears Tan leather (2 small tabs)
  • Weed guard Clear weed guard (Mono loop (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend; if using a weed guard, bind in the mono there.
  2. Tie in a thin leather or chenille tail about one shank length long, trailing off the back.
  3. Spin a clump of deer hair at the bend, pack it tight, then spin and pack successive clumps forward to the eye, keeping the hook clear.
  4. At the front, leave a small clump of tips swept back on top to suggest the nose and set two small leather ear tabs.
  5. Whip finish at the eye and remove the hook from the vise.
  6. Trim the spun hair with scissors into a rounded mouse body, flat on the bottom so it rides upright and pushes water.
  7. Secure the weed-guard loop if used.
