Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry-fly/terrestrial hook, #8-#12
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan foam (2mm foam strip, over a dubbed underbody)
  • Underbody Tan carapace (Coarse dubbing)
  • Legs Barred yellow/brown rubber legs (2 pairs round rubber legs)
  • Underwing Natural tan material (Bunch of elk hair)
  • Indicator Orange/pink material (Foam or para post tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend; bind the tail end of the foam strip down there.
  2. Dub a thin underbody forward, then pull the foam over the top and lash it down at two or three points to form segmented body sections.
  3. Tie in a pair of rubber legs on each side at the rear segment, splayed outward.
  4. Clean and stack a bunch of elk hair and bind it over the body as an underwing, tips reaching the bend.
  5. Fold the front of the foam back over the wing and lock it down to form a bullet head, leaving a short foam tab.
  6. Post a bright foam or synthetic indicator tuft on top for visibility and add a front pair of rubber legs, then whip finish under the head.
