Shrimp · Bonefish · Redfish · Sea Trout · Snook · Permit · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Gamakatsu SL45 or Tiemco 811S, 1-6
  • Thread Tan UTC 140

Materials

  • Eyes (weight) Small lead dumbbell or bead chain (1 pair)
  • Shrimp eyes Black EP Crab/Shrimp eyes on mono (1 pair)
  • Antennae Orange and root beer Krystal Flash (4-6 strands)
  • Mouthparts/claws Tan EP Foxy Brush fibers or craft fur (1 clump)
  • Egg sac Orange EP Fibers or dubbing (1 ball)
  • Body Tan EP Foxy Brush, wrapped (1 brush)
  • Legs Barred tan Sili legs (2-3 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Lash the dumbbell eyes on top of the shank behind the hook eye so the fly rides point-up.
  2. At the bend, tie in the flash antennae (1.5-2 shank lengths), the mono shrimp eyes splayed wide, and a clump of tan fibers as mouthparts.
  3. Tie in a bright orange ball of EP Fibers or dubbing under the bend. The spawning egg sac is the trigger the whole fly is named for.
  4. Tie in the EP Foxy Brush and wrap it forward in touching turns like a hackle, stroking fibers back each turn, to the dumbbell eyes.
  5. Add barred Sili Legs along the sides between wraps, 2-3 per side.
  6. Figure-eight the brush or dubbing around the eyes, whip finish at the hook eye, and brush the body fibers down and back; trim the belly slightly flat.
