How to tie it
Start black 8/0 thread about two eye-widths behind the eye and lay a short, smooth base over the front third of the shank. On a short-shank hook that front section is the only real estate you have, so keep the wraps tidy and use only as much thread as you need for the head and the wing tie-ins.
Cut a sparse bunch of yellow bucktail, roughly align the tips, and measure it about two shank lengths so it streams well past the bend. Tie it on top at that same tie-in point, trim the butts on a taper and bind them down.
Lay two strands of silver Flashabou directly over the yellow, tie them down at the same point and trim them off level with the wing tips. Two strands only. This is what replaces the silver tinsel body a long-shank Mickey Finn would carry.
Tie in a bunch of red bucktail of the same length directly over the flash, checking as you cinch down that equal amounts of yellow show on both sides of the fly. Trim the butts on a taper and cover them.
Add two more strands of silver Flashabou over the red, again trimmed to wing length, so the flash ends up sandwiched inside the wing rather than sitting on the shank.
Finish the wing with a last sparse bunch of yellow bucktail over everything, same length as the rest. Roll the bunch with your fingers as you tighten so red and yellow both show along each side.
Take two or three soft wraps at the back of the tie-in area to hold all the hair back and stop it splaying, then bind down any stray fibres poking forward.
Build a smooth tapered head over the trimmed butts, whip finish and soak the head with cement.
