How to tie it
Put about 12 wraps of.015 lead on a size 12 1XL wet fly hook. Start black 70 denier thread with a dam behind the weight, wrap forward over it, dam it in front, and take the thread to the tail.
Pull six or eight fibers with even tips from the blue/silver metallic pheasant feather that sits under the church windows, and tie them in at the rear as a tail about a hook gap long. Bind the butts forward to the weight and trim.
Tie the red 210 denier thread in for the rib, pulling it down so it comes off the bottom of the hook before you bind it back to the tail. That way the first rib wrap looks like it emerges from underneath.
Dub a thin noodle of bright yellow onto the black thread. Go sparse and be prepared to make two applications, since black thread will show through. And wrap the body up to the front of the weighted section.
Counter-wrap the red rib forward in evenly spaced, fairly close turns so plenty of red shows, and tie it off with two or three tight wraps.
Tie in about 15 brown ringneck pheasant fibers on top for the wing case, trim the excess and bury the butts, smoothing the step-down at the front of the weight.
Pull small wisps of pheasant schlappen off the stem and touch-dub them onto the thread, then build a deliberately fat, buggy thorax.
Take the same metallic pheasant feather used for the tail, strip the base, cut a V-notch out of the tip, and tie it in behind the eye with two loose wraps so a leg splays down each side. Slide it forward to shorten the legs to about half their starting length before locking it down, then trim the excess.
Gather all the brown wing-case fibers, pull them forward over the thorax and lock them down with two tight wraps, using them to settle the legs into position. Snip the excess.
Build a fairly large head behind the eye and whip finish.
