Elden's Golden

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry-fly / stimulator hook, 6-10
  • Thread Golden yellow 70 denier

Materials

  • Tail Elk or deer hair (small bunch)
  • Abdomen Golden-brown dubbing or foam (pinch/1)
  • Body hackle Brown or furnace, palmered (1 feather)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (to protect palmer) (4-5 turns)
  • Wing Natural elk hair (small bunch)
  • Legs Barred round rubber, gold/brown (1-2 pairs)
  • Front hackle Grizzly and/or brown front hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in a short elk-hair tail about a shank length long.
  2. Tie in a brown hackle and fine gold wire at the bend, dub a golden-brown abdomen forward, then palmer the hackle back and counter-wrap the wire forward through it in 4-5 turns to lock it (the wire keeps the palmer from unraveling on toothy takes).
  3. Stack a bunch of elk hair and tie it in as a downwing extending to about the bend.
  4. Add a pair of barred rubber legs to each side at the wing tie-in point.
  5. Dub a short thorax and wind a grizzly/brown front hackle through it for flotation, tie off, whip finish and cement.
