Reference Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gap streamer/stinger hook (Gamakatsu B10S), fished point-up, #1-#2
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Silver metal tape (Dumbbell or I-Balz, mounted to ride point-up)
  • Tail/Wing Olive ostrich herl (1 magnum rabbit strip, ~1.5 shank lengths)
  • Flash Copper flashabou (Few strands Krystal Flash)
  • Body Olive/brown buggerbou mini barred (Simi-Seal dubbing)
  • Fins Barred olive fins (1 pair silicone legs)
  • Head Olive-brown material (Simi-Seal spun in a dubbing loop, trimmed broad and flat)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, lay a thread base, and lock a dumbbell eye on top a shank-quarter behind the eye so the fly rides point-up.
  2. At the bend, tie in the magnum rabbit strip tail about 1.5 shank lengths long, hide down, then add a few strands of copper flash along it.
  3. Dub a Simi-Seal body forward to the 60% mark, keeping it shaggy.
  4. Tie in a pair of silicone legs splayed at the sides as pectoral fins.
  5. Spin Simi-Seal in a dubbing loop and wrap a dense collar forward, figure-8ing around the dumbbell to pack in bulk.
  6. Sweep all the head fibers rearward and whip finish behind the eye.
  7. Trim the head broad and flat top-and-bottom into a wide sculpin wedge, leaving the sides full. Bounce it along the bottom on a sink-tip with slow strips for big trout and bass.
