Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy 60-degree jig/streamer hook (Gamakatsu B10S), fished hook-point up, #4-#6
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Plated silver material (Large lead barbell, mounted to flip the fly point-up)
  • Claws Rusty brown (2 rabbit strips, hide-out, splayed in a V)
  • Antennae/Legs Barred olive-brown rubber legs (1-2 pairs silicone rubber legs)
  • Flash Copper/root beer flash (Small pinch Krystal Flash)
  • Body Rusty brown/orange (Simi-Seal or crawdad dubbing, shaggy)
  • Resin Clear uv resin (UV resin over the eye wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base; bind the lead barbell eyes on top of the shank a shank-quarter behind the eye so the fly rides point-up, then lock them with figure-8 wraps.
  2. At the bend, tie in two rabbit-strip claws splayed into a wide V, each about one shank length, hide facing out so they flare when stripped.
  3. Add a pinch of copper flash and a pair of barred silicone legs as antennae, sweeping back past the claws.
  4. Dub a shaggy Simi-Seal body forward, stopping at the 70% mark; pick out fibers underneath to suggest legs.
  5. Tie in a second pair of silicone legs at the sides, splayed out like walking legs.
  6. Figure-8 dubbing around the barbell eyes to build a crayfish head, sweep the fibers back, and whip finish behind the eye.
  7. Add a drop of UV resin over the eye wraps to lock everything down.
