Mount an egg or scud hook and start orange or pink thread behind the eye; run the thread back to the bend.
Cut a short section of red San Juan worm chenille (Ultra Chenille or micro-chenille) and tie it in at the bend so a tail of about one shank-length trails off the back; bind it down securely.
Singe the trailing tip of the worm chenille with a lighter to taper and seal it, leaving a soft wiggling tail.
Advance the thread to the front third of the shank. Take a clump of egg yarn (or tie in Estaz), and either wind the Estaz into a dense ball or bind the yarn on top and gather it upright.
If using yarn, pull all the fibers up, hold them taut, and take tight wraps at the base to stand them into a fat egg ball; sweep the fibers over the eye and trim close and round with sharp scissors to shape a tight egg.
Whip finish behind the eye and add a drop of cement.
