Egg Layer Caddis

Egg · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard nymph/wet hook, #12-#16
  • Thread Brown or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Bead (optional) Gold tungsten bead (1)
  • Egg sac Bright green glass bead or dubbing (1 or pinch)
  • Body Olive or brown dubbing (Thin noodle)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (1 strand)
  • Wing/Legs Brown partridge or hen (1 feather)
  • Thorax Peacock or dark hare's ear (Pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally slide a bead on, mount the hook, and start thread at the bend.
  2. Build a bright green egg sac at the very rear with a glass bead or a tight ball of dubbing, since egg-laying caddis carry a vivid egg mass.
  3. Bind in the gold rib, then dub a slim body forward to the 65% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the rib in 5-6 evenly spaced turns and snip.
  5. Wrap a soft partridge collar and sweep the fibers back as legs.
  6. Dub a short dark thorax to the eye and whip finish.
