Reference Recipe

  • Hook Czech/scud (curved) hook, #12-#16
  • Thread Olive 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Gold or copper slotted tungsten (1 (2.4-3.0mm))
  • Weight Lead-free wire, .015 (6-8 turns)
  • Rib Olive crystal flash / mono (1 strand)
  • Shell back Clear/olive scud back (Nymph-Skin) (1 strip)
  • Body Olive dubbing (Dubbing loop)
  • Thorax Peacock ice dub / peacock herl (Pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead on, mount the curved hook, and wrap 6-8 turns of lead into the back of the bead; start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in the scud-back strip and the crystal-flash rib at the bend, both trailing rearward.
  3. Load a thin dubbing loop with olive dubbing, spin it tight, and wrap a slim segmented body forward to just behind the bead.
  4. Stretch the scud back over the top for a shiny shell and pin it down behind the bead.
  5. Counter-wrap the rib in 5-6 evenly spaced turns over the shell to segment the caddis larva, then snip.
  6. Dub a short peacock thorax up to the bead and whip finish.
