Egan's Frenchie Chironomid

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger or jig hook, 16 (14-18)
  • Thread Red 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Slotted tungsten bead, silver or black, 2.3-2.5mm (1)
  • Tail (optional) Coq de Leon fibers, pardo (few fibers)
  • Body Tying thread or fine dubbing (as needed)
  • Rib Fine copper or silver wire (5-6 turns)
  • Thorax/collar Peacock Ice Dub or UV pink hot spot (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the slotted tungsten bead onto a curved hook and start red thread behind it.
  2. Optionally tie in a few short Coq de Leon fibers at the bend for a stub tail, then build a slim, gently tapered thread body forward around the curve, mimicking a chironomid pupa.
  3. Tie in fine wire at the rear and counter-rib forward in 5-6 tight, evenly spaced turns for crisp midge segmentation, then break it off.
  4. Dub a small peacock or UV pink collar/thorax behind the bead as the hot spot.
  5. Whip finish and coat the body with thin UV resin for a glassy, pupa-like sheen.
