How to tie it
Start grey thread on a beaded size 10 scud hook and tie in small silver ultra wire, then run the thread back up to the front. The wire goes on first so the rib is ready before the body ever exists.
Tie in a bundle of Easter egg basket grass at the front, fold it back over itself so it sits centred over the shank and stays out of your way, and trim off anything you do not need. This shredded foil is the magic of the pattern. It is pure flash, and fall fish want flash.
Work the thread back to the bend and tie in 5mm UV Straggle, then bring the thread forward again to just behind the flash tie-in.
Wrap the Straggle forward in side-by-side turns, brushing the fibres rearward as you go, and secure with a couple of turns behind the bead. Straggle fibres are the legs and gill fringe of the scud.
Give the top of the body a haircut before you pull the shell back over. It is not strictly necessary, but a flat top makes the next step far easier.
Take a half turn of wire, pull the Easter egg flash over the top as a shell back, capture it, and rib forward in even segments, tucking the wire in behind the bead for a clean tie-off with almost no thread showing.
Whip finish, leaving a short tag of flash out the back as a tail, and trim any fibres that will not cooperate. Fish it in the fall when a little extra flash gets noticed.
